Born and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Justin had an early interest in mind, body, health, and athletic performance.
Growing up with an extended family of medical professionals, continuing that trend seemed inevitable.
Justin's interest in sports developed for a love of movement, connection, community, and optimizing performance.
Blending the two together, Physical Therapy proved to be the perfect fit.
He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology and continued to obtain his Doctorate from Franklin Pierce University outside of Boston.
A final internship brought Justin to the West Coast (North County San Diego), leading to his first job in an outpatient orthopedic Physical Therapy clinic.
6 years later, Dr. Ternes still calls San Diego home. The culture and lifestyle fit hand in hand. It also helps that he lives 2 blocks from the crown-jewel of spiritual spaces, the Encinitas Self-Realization Meditation Gardens.
As Justin began to do inner work for personal health and human optimization, he found that using the tools of breathwork, mindset, emotional health, and meditation directly translated to a dramatic shift and improvement in his level of care for patients.
True Self Health was born, and his practice evolved.
Dr. Ternes now offers Mind/Body/Breath Mindset & Performance coaching, in addition to his work as a Physiotherapist.
He leads multiple weekly online and in-person workshops and events including breathwork, ice bath, and men's group.
In his spare time, Justin is a human health and optimization nerd and is constantly absorbing new information to best serve his clients and greater community.
In his recreational spare time, you'll find him outside. Surfing, hiking, practicing breathwork & meditation, and playing basketball (his first love).
Extensive research supports the application of breathwork in healthcare for improving everything from immune function, anxiety levels, physical and mental performance, mood regulation, and overall quality of life.
